The purpose of examination is not just for students and candidates but also for the nation and educational institutions. Examinations
are used for educational reforms and for development purposes. Examination malpractice makes it difficult for the government or educational institutions to
know the extent to which the objectives of education are being served.
Examination malpractice robs individuals and the nation of
the benefits of education. It makes it impossible to use an examination in
determining the level of a candidate in absorbing reproduction and where appropriate in applying knowledge.
Examination malpractice seems to be redefining education in Nigeria.it must be mentioned here that some people may hold diplomas or degree
certificates to make proof of their being educated, they think being educated
means only getting through a university or getting a degree of some kind.mere possession of a diploma or degree is no proof of education.
For a person to be regarded as educated, the criteria for
education must be met to a certain extent and adequately too.it must be proved
to be working according to the aims of education.
The developed nations of the world like Britain,Canada, united states of America, japan,Germany are what they are today
not because God loves them better, but because education and its process are
valued and rooted from the grass-root. The criteria for education are strictly
adhered to.
In Nigeria today, the goal of education as seen from the present day educational scene has slipped
to utilitarian aspect of education. This trend is a misconception and the reason for supremacy of means over
ends and the consequent collapse of all sure purpose for real efficiency.
Today, because of the undue emphasis laid on paper
qualification, students barely graduate from schools without acquiring
knowledge, without the school or education passing through them.this is because
of the misconception attached to education, they think that it is just a process
of obtaining a certificate at the expense of quality training and knowledge.
This generally has generated a lot of social problems in the Nigerian society.there are cries all over the country about social ills like
robbery, corruption, violence of all types, drug abuse, backward technological
development.have we ever paused to ask, what are the causes of all these? Some
may say its lack of employment, others may argue it is laziness, but I I believe
that the problem today is the misconception of what education is all about.
Our poor educational values have been responsible for our
situation today. Parent’s involvement in such immoral behaviors like
examination malpractice is partly due to the fact that what a lot of parents
want is certificates and not the knowledge.
parent’s involvement in these ills
have contributed a lot to the devaluation of education by the students
themselves.hence the zeal to get qualitative education from the beginning is
usually rooted about by the parents themselves. This is a sure beginning of the misconception of education from the family.
